Martha Argerich and Zubin Mehta at the Musikverein

14. 03. 2024

Legendary pianist Martha Argerich, a frequent guest at the Ljubljana Festival, most recently in 2021, heads to the Vienna Musikverein on Friday, 15 March 2024 to perform Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major with the Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by the great maestro Zubin Mehta.  Both pianist and conductor will also be appearing at this summer’s 72nd Ljubljana Festival.

Zubin Mehta has long been one of the world’s most admired classical musicians. He has served as music director of numerous orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, which he led for 13 years, making his tenure the longest in the Philharmonic’s history. In 1969 he was appointed music adviser to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, becoming its music director in 1977 and named music director for life in 1981. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and honours, including the Golden Order of Merit, which he received in 2019 from the president of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, in recognition of his supreme contribution to musical performance. He has collaborated with numerous opera houses and will appear in Ljubljana this year with the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino on three successive evenings: at a gala concert on 9 July with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and violinist Lana Trotovšek, with a programme comprising three of Beethoven’s most famous works; and on 8 and 10 July conducting Verdi’s opera Il Trovatore, directed by Stefania Grazioli.

The 72nd Ljubljana Festival will be closed on 3 September in magnificent style by Martha Argerich performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, a work that incorporates the influences of jazz and Basque folk music. She will be accompanied by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the Swiss maestro Charles Dutoit, a recipient of the highly prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal, who has been collaborating with the Ljubljana Festival for a number of years. The celebrated pianist and conductor appeared together in Ljubljana in 2021 at the 69th edition of the summer festival.
