A press conference to present the programme of the 72nd Ljubljana Festival took place at the Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini in Catania, Sicily on Monday, 25 March.
Among the speakers at the press conference was the Ljubljana Festival’s general and artistic director Darko Brlek. The event was hosted by the Conservatorio’s director, the pianist and conductor Epifanio Comis, who is also one of the teachers at the Ljubljana Festival Masterclasses 2024 and the artistic director of the Ljubljana Festival International Competition – Piano. He will be appearing in Ljubljana at this year’s summer festival in the role of conductor.
He will conduct the Orchestra Sinfonica del Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini di Catania in a concert on 22 July (beginning at 9.00 pm). Founded by Epifanio Comis in 2020, the orchestra also incorporates teachers and students from the Associazione Musicale Etnea.
The diverse programme of the concert at the Križanke Summer Theatre will begin with Omaggio a Bellini by Saverio Mercadante, one of the leading Italian opera composers of his day. This will be followed by Italia, a rhapsody for orchestra by Alfredo Casella, an influential composer of the interwar period who has a connection with Slovenia by virtue of the fact that he taught Primož Ramovš. The concert will continue after the interval with Pavane pour une infante défunte and Ma mère l’Oye, two masterfully orchestrated compositions by the impressionist composer Maurice Ravel, before concluding with George Gershwin’s jazz-influenced symphonic poem An American in Paris.
The other speakers at the press conference were Carmelo Galati, president of the Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini, and Giuseppe Montemagno, a professor at the same institution.
