The action of the opera The Queen of Spades invites us into the world of aristocratic St Petersburg society. Set to music of epic dimensions, the plot of the opera revolves around two young lovers, Herman and Liza, the latter recently betrothed to Prince Yeletsky. Liza is the granddaughter of the old Countess, famous for her skill at cards, thanks to a special sequence of three cards that allows her to win. After a series of shocking events generated by the fateful spiral of a game of chance and unrequited love, the opera reaches its tragic end. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the opera to a libretto by his brother Modest, based on the novella of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. If Eugene Oneginis Tchaikovsky’s best-known opera, The Queen of Spades, with its dramatic twists and intense emotional and musical expressivity, is his second most important opera. The Bolshoi Theatre will perform The Queen of Spadesunder the baton of its music director and principal conductor Tugan Sokhiev, who has held this prestigious position since 2014. Over the course of an 18-year career, Sokhiev has conducted some of the finest orchestras of Europe, the USA and Japan, among them the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
