Film music was initally strongly influenced by Richard Wagner and his use of leitmotifs – recurring musical phrases associated with a particular character, object or situation – it later developed into an entirely independent tradition that continues to move listeners throughout the world. Wednesday’s concert at Križanke will give listeners the chance to hear a broad selection of film music and classical and popular excerpts that have featured in some of the most popular animated and live-action films and franchises, along with a composition by Lauri Porra, the great-grandson of composer Jean Sibelius. The programme will be performed by the Slovene Youth Orchestra under versatile conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh, the orchestra’s founder and artistic director. Founded in 2019, the Slovene Youth Orchestra prepares young musicians aged 16–26 for a professional career through a variety of projects. The soloist will be the Finnish bassist and composer Lauri Porra, who has collaborated on more than 50 albums ranging from heavy metal to contemporary classical, electronic, hip-hop and pop. The evening will be moderated by television presenter and journalist Marcel Štefančič, a man with a unique gift for debate and dialogue who has written more than a hundred books on film, literature, music and sociopolitical issues.

  • film music was born soon after the birth of cinema in 1895; since early films were silent, musical accompaniment was usually provided by pianists, or sometimes by a whole orchestra
  • in some cases it took less time to shoot a film than it did to record its soundtrack; the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby  took two years to create, while the soundtrack for a one-hour episode of a television series requires two to three weeks
  • Lauri Porra is also famous as the bass guitarist of Finnish power metal band Stratovarius
  • he has released five instrumental solo albums, including Entropia (with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra) in January 2018
  • the Slovene Youth Orchestra, conducted by Živa Ploj Peršuh, has been a regular guest at Ljubljana Festival events since its founding in 2019
