The opening concert evening of the Winter Festival features brilliant Russian violinist Sergei Dogadin, a rising star of the classical music world. Dogadin has won some of the most prestigious violin competitions and his successes have led to invitations from Valery Gergiev to perform with him and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra at summer festivals around Europe. He also took part in the Tchaikovsky Competition Winners tour of Japan. Dogadin is currently continuing his studies under Boris Kuschnir at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He plays a 1721 Domenico Montagnana violin, on loan from the Rin Collection in Singapore. Sergei Dogadin will be accompanied by the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra conducted by the Brazilian conductor and pianist Ricardo Castro, who has played with and conducted renowned orchestras in prestigious concert halls around the world over the course of his career. In 2007, at the invitation of the government of the state of Bahia, he created NEOJIBA (State Centres of Youth and Children’s Orchestras of Bahia). He is also principal conductor and artistic director of the Youth Orchestra of Bahia, the first Brazilian youth orchestra to perform in Europe. In 2013 he became the first Brazilian to be awarded honorary membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London.
