In 1951, the eight men who brought the name Slovene Octet to the world first sang in the Philharmonic Hall. Many different singers have been members of the ensemble, whose mission however remains the preservation and enrichment of Slovenian vocal music, and it performs a very broad and diverse choir repertoire. Many similar ensembles have been inspired to form by their example. On its 20th anniversary (1971) the octet encouraged the formation of a Meeting of Slovenian Choirs in Šentvid pri Stični, which continues to bring together Slovenian singing enthusiasts from Slovenia and around the world. The Slovene Octet has published more than 60 LPs, cassettes and CDs. As a tribute to its past generations, in 2007 the ensemble published a book by Boris Pangerc entitled Slovenski oktet, in which its history and mission are described in detail. For its achievements the octet has twice received the Prešeren Fund Prize (1957, 1964), the Society of Slovene Composers Prize (1971), the Drebosnjak Prize (1975), the Orlando di Lassa Prize (1984), the Order of Freedom of the Republic of Slovenia (1996) and the Honorary Certificate of the Slovenian World Congress (2016).
