Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, deals with a theme that was very close to the composer’s heart: the triumph of freedom over tyranny and man’s victory over political injustice. In this Beethoven year, the Ljubljana Festival gives us the opportunity to hear a concert performance of this opera with an international cast of singers (including some very big names) accompanied by the Gstaad Festival Orchestra. The orchestra will be conducted by the internationally acclaimed Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden, who is currently music director of the New York Philharmonic and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, who has already enjoyed several notable and successful collaborations with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra. Since 2010 the Gstaad Festival Orchestra has brought together the best musicians from Switzerland’s leading orchestras in Zurich, Basel and Bern. It has continued to mature season after season and is now well established as a brilliant and charismatic first-class orchestra. The main roles will be sung by two of today’s most sought-after opera singers, the German soprano Anja Kampe in the role of the heroine Leonore and the German tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Florestan.
