One of the greatest film composers of all time, John Williams, is this year’s recipient of the prestigious honour awarded by the Royal Philharmonic Society, in recognition of a life spent bringing orchestral music closer to the general public. Williams has scored such universally famous films as Star Wars, the Harry Potter series, Schindler’s List, Home Alone, Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Superman, The Witches of Eastwick, the Indiana Jones films, the Jurassic Park series and Saving Private Ryan, among many others.

Ever since its introduction in 1870, the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal has been considered one of the highest honours and awards for outstanding merit in the world of music. Accepting the medal, John Williams said: “to receive this award is beyond any expectation I could possibly have. For any composer to be able to devote his or her life entirely to the composition of music is very fortunate indeed.”

The composer also received the congratulations of his long-standing collaborator, the director Steven Spielberg: “John, you have brought the classical idiom to young people all over the world through your scores, and through your classical training and your classical sensibilities. You are in the DNA of the musical culture of today.”

Over the course of his fruitful career, Williams has won 25 Grammy Awards, seven BAFTA Awards, five Academy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards. With 52 Oscar nominations, he is the second most nominated person in the history of the Academy Awards, behind Walt Disney.
