The tango is a partner dance that spread to Western Europe and the USA in the early twentieth century and developed into various global forms. Its exact origin is unclear, but African, Spanish and Cuban roots are mentioned. We will hear the music of the most influential tango composers, among them Astor Piazzolla, an Argentinian revolutionary whose experimental approach meant that several decades would pass before he was accepted in his home country as the saviour of tango. He is joined in the programme by his countrymen Agustín Bardi, a representative of the “old guard”, Carlos Gardel, one of the most important and most celebrated tango singers of all time, and Juan Carlos Cobián, a composer who focused more on concert music than on traditional dance music. Interrupting the Argentinian pieces in the programme will be a Neapolitan song by the Italian composer Carlo Alberto Rossi. The performers will be the accordion quartet 4 Bellows 4 Tales, consisting of Stefano Bembi, Zoran Lupinc, Maurizio Marchesich and Imad Saletović. This unique ensemble, with a repertoire extending from the baroque to the modern era, breathes life into a variety of musical genres and creates both traditional and entirely new harmonies. They will join forces with bandoneonist Rodolfo Mederos, who, as a member of numerous ensembles, has mixed tango with genres such as jazz and rock. He is the recipient of multiple Latin Grammy nominations, including for the albums 13 (2016) with his traditional orchestra and En su huella (2017) with his trio.
