Pylade, a play by the celebrated and controversial Italian director, poet, playwright, journalist and politician Pier Paolo Pasolini, addresses weighty topics such as democracy, consumerism, the new mob mentality and the struggle for social change. Pasolini based his verse tragedy, which he began writing in 1966, on Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy. The play centres on the idea of renewal – of social norms, political structures and religious beliefs. The New York premiere production of Pylade was rapturously received, its success in large part due to the excellent cast assembled by renowned Croatian director Ivica Buljan and headed by Marko Mandić, one of the leading lights of Slovene theatre, in the title role.
