Mozart’s flute quartets are works with an interesting and complex history. Despite occasionally expressing reservations about the flute, the composer created works for the instrument that demonstrate all his mastery. The Flute Quartet No. 2 in G-major, K. 285a, the manuscript of which is lost, was published after Mozart’s death in separate parts. Planned during the composer’s extended stay in Mannheim, it reflected the influence of modern styles and Mozart’s gift for melody, skilfully interwoven with the rich harmonies of the strings. It will be performed at this concert by four excellent musicians whose passion for teaching has also led them to roles as professors at The Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini di Catania.
Aura Cosentino (flute) graduated with distinction from the Luigi Cherubini Conservatoire in Florence in 1983. She attended courses in interpretation with renowned master flautists and went on to win numerous accolades and distinctions, including prizes at national and international competitions. She has been first flute of the Orchestra da Camera di Bologna, the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana and the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo of Catania. Giovanni Anastasio (violin) trained at the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatoire in Catania under the guidance of Vito Imperato. He has attended masterclasses at the University of North Carolina, Duke University, Hunter College in New York and Nuevo León University and has been leader of several orchestras. Samuele Danese (viola) graduated with top marks from the Niccolò Piccinni Conservatoire in Bari before continuing his studies at masterclasses in Italy and abroad. He gained a concert diploma at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg in Germany and advanced diplomas in viola and chamber music from the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He performs regularly in major theatres around Italy and is an acclaimed first viola in various orchestras. Benedetto Munzone (cello) graduated from the Arrigo Boito Conservatoire in Parma and went on to train with some of the world’s finest cellists. His career to date has included collaborations with eminent musicians and appearances at prestigious European festivals.
