The concert activities of the Society of Slovene Composers have become increasingly extensive and distinctive over the decades. In 1992 Marko Mihevc inaugurated the concert series Night of Slovene Composers, modelled on Vienna’s Lange Nacht der Musik. The essential mission of this series remains that of presenting new, exclusively Slovene compositions. This means that the event is always a diverse blend of formal and compositional approaches and aesthetic premises that showcase home-grown creativity. The motivating force behind the composition of the ten new works that will receive their premiere performances at the fifth concert of this year’s Slovenian Music Days was MD7 – an instrumental chamber ensemble with a particular commitment to the performance of new music. The virtuosity and adaptability of the ensemble’s members make it an excellent platform that gives composers the freedom to express their musical ideas and explore new possibilities in sound. Unique and highly individual, the ensemble offers an endless combination of specific, exciting and unusual tonal colours.
Once again, original Slovene works for various solo instruments, duos and trios have been created using the interesting combinations of instruments offered by the ensemble. Percussion was the inspiration for Janko Jezovšek Jizou, an original composer who convincingly blends innovation with deeply emotional and introspective music. Timotej Kosovinc, a composer who blurs the boundaries between classical and popular music to create a musical language that is complex but also accessible, offers a new work for cello solo. Igor Majcen, a composer who realises his musical ideas in a broad and sonically unconstrained expressive realm, was this time drawn to the clarinet. Blaženka Arnič Lemež, a composer whose musical syntax often combines the simplicity of folk music with contemporary elements, found inspiration in the combination of clarinet and vibraphone.
Six of the new works are for trios, with their composers having taken advantage of the diversity of sounds and tonal colours offered by the ensemble. Vladimir Batista, a composer who skilfully navigates the worlds of classical music, jazz and improvisation, has realised his musical idea in a trio for marimba, piano and cello. Clarinet, percussion and piano combine in a new work by Pavel Dolenc, primarily a composer of vocal and chamber music. Tilen Slakan, a composer who has earned wide acclaim for his stylistic freshness, has placed the viola and cello alongside percussion, while Emil Spruk, whose compositions stem from a profound inner experience of the world and a unique relationship with music, has in his piece combined them with a clarinet. This evening of premiere performances of new Slovene works, always an exciting occasion, will end with a new work for clarinet, trombone and cello by Žiga Stanič, a versatile artist with his own compositional aspirations.
