One of the greatest acting icons of the former Yugoslavia, as well as a director, poet, musician, and all-around artist, returns to the stage of the Ljubljana Festival this summer with his band, Zapadni Kolodvor. Rade Šerbedžija captivates his audiences with a unique sense of humor, interspersed with prose, poetry, and anecdotes about the life of an artist who, despite a successful career, was pushed to the margins of society by political upheavals in the early 1990s.
As a musician, he began making his mark in the 1970s when he released his first album. He has published four collections of poetry, covering a wide range of themes—“love and social, contemplative and protest, joyful and sorrowful,” as he describes them. His musical works, often set to his own texts, can be characterized as distinctive chansons, many of which have become timeless hits. Infused with a variety of influences—from rock to ethnic music—his creations owe much to his numerous musical collaborators, including Husein Hus Hasanefendić, Damir Urban, Miroslav Tadić, Gabi Novak, Matija Dedić, Saša Lošić, Vlado Kreslin, and Jure Ivanušić, who often join him in his performances.
