Inspired by Handel’s magnificent oratorios, which he heard during his visits to London, Joseph Haydn decided to write an oratorio of his own. The libretto of The Creation, written by Baron Gottfried van Swieten, is based on the Book of Genesis, which tells the story of the creation of the world in seven days. For Haydn, writing the oratorio was a profound religious experience. He told later biographers that during its composition he prayed to God every day to give him the strength to complete the work. The oratorio, which captivated audiences from its very first performance, is considered to be one of the first universal works, intended both for the general public and for musical connoisseurs.

It will be performed at the 73rd Ljubljana Festival by the Catalan theatre company La Fura dels Baus, famed for its genre-crossing creations and innovative stagings, and for blurring the boundaries between performers and audience. Director Carlus Padrissa, a long-time collaborator of the Ljubljana Festival, co-founded the company in 1979. It achieved worldwide fame with its performance at the opening ceremony of the summer Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992. The ADDA Symphony Orchestra and Slovenian Philharmonic Choir will be conducted by the versatile Josep Vicent, musical director of La Fura dels Baus since 2014. Vicent is the recipient of numerous musical awards and an ambassador of the Culture of Peace Foundation. The soloists will be the soprano Alba Fernández-Cano, who made her Moscow debut in the role of Gabriel in Haydn’s Creation, the tenor Víctor Sordo, an early music specialist, and the baritone Toni Marsol, known for his interpretations of roles from the Italian operatic repertoire.
