G. GERSHWIN (arr. F. AVSENEK): Andante con moto e poco rubato for Piano

The viola only established itself as a solo instrument in the early twentieth century. As a result, the solo repertoire for this instrument dating from before 1900 is very small. Even Brahms’s Sonata Op. 120 was originally written for clarinet and only subsequently arranged for viola. Franc Avsenek is the composer of numerous works, which he has performed in a variety of chamber ensembles. He has also been the solo violist with the RTV Slovenija Symphony Orchestra for many years. He has taught at the Ljubljana Academy of Music for more than 20 years, just like his musical partner in this concert programme, the renowned pianist Hinko Haas.
