The Ljubljana Festival begins its 64th edition in magnificent style with a concert under the starry sky and with an opera star on stage. The Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott was propelled onto the world’s great opera stages by his 1998 victory in the Operalia competition, founded by Plácido Domingo. In recent years he has been among the most highly regarded singers of the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni and is also considered one of the finest interpreters of the other Mozartian roles of Leporello and Figaro. This basso cantante par excellence, as the critics have called him, will perform arias from Don Giovanni and a selection of operatic arias from the romantic nineteenth century. Schrott will alternate with the Argentine soprano Jaquelina Liveri in songs on the eternal (operatic) theme of love. In addition to solo arias the pair will also perform a number of duets. These two first-rate singers will share the stage with the powerful sound of the combined philharmonic orchestras of Zagreb and Ljubljana, directed by the young Italian conductor Francesco Ivano Ciampa, a rising star.
The premiere concert in Ljubljana will be repeated on 8 July in Zagreb’s King Tomislav Square.
