The beginnings of the Slovene Octet date back to 1951, when it first sang in the Slovenian Philharmonic Hall, and ever since then it has been considered the most representative Slovenian male, vocal, chamber ensemble. In 70 active years it has performed on almost all major Slovenian and international concert stages, and at Ljubljana Festival on numerous occasions. Its primary mission is to preserve and enhance Slovenian vocal music. The octet’s repertoire is extremely broad and diverse, as it includes compositions from the Renaissance to folk songs from various nations, from classicism and the romantic period to modern compositions, many of them written or adapted specially for the octet. It devotes particular attention to Slovenian songs, both folk and artistic, which it always presents with special enthusiasm on Slovenian concert stages, but also enjoys performing to expatriates and lovers of song around the world. The programme combines sacred and patriotic songs by composers who left a lasting impression on the Slovenian and Yugoslav cultural landscapes, and whose faces on busts now adorn Plečnik’s Avenue of Slovenian composers on Vegova ulica in Ljubljana. The light, emotional and folk character of the songs remains popular to this day, while in the past national awareness was strengthened by the many texts and light-hearted melodies.
With this concert, the octet wishes to honour seven decades of singing by past generations.
