A number of connections exist among the composers included in tonight’s programme. All of them were also renowned and active pianists. Hummel in particular, whose “Complete Theoretical and Practical Course of Instruction on the Art of Playing the Piano Forte” influenced pianists for generations. It is said that for a brief period he even gave lessons to Mendelssohn, whose own works showed the influence of Beethoven. Although Hummel and Beethoven were contemporaries, differences in compositional practice may be observed in their music. Their works are performed here by the Petrač brothers, both of them acclaimed musicians and teachers.
