EuroCubans is a fourteen-piece Cuban–Slovene orchestra performing thrilling Cuban music blended into a collage of evergreen melodies, fiery rhythms and contemporary original compositions by some of the island’s finest musicians.
The group was founded by the Slovene percussionist Črt Pšeničnik and the Grammy-winning Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González, one of the central figures in Cuban music. It was the latter’s collaboration with Ry Cooder that gave birth to the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon, and we also know him as the leader of the world-famous Afro-Cuban All Stars.
González’s collaborations with many top musicians have contributed significantly to the popularisation of Cuban music throughout the world. EuroCubans, a fresh ensemble that is bringing a selection of the finest traditional and contemporary Cuban musical creativity to European audiences, conquered festival stages throughout Slovenia and the Balkans last year.
In addition to Pšeničnik and González, the group features other prominent names from the worlds of jazz and Latin popular music: trumpeter Juan Munguía (Irakere, Dizzy Gillespie & the United Nations Band, Paquito D’Rivera, Celia Cruz), bassist Dany Noel (Roy Hargrove, Chucho Valdés, José Alberto “El Canario,” Alfredo De La Fe, The New York Salsa All Stars, Celia Cruz, Paquito D’Rivera), percussionist Pepe Espinosa (Conjunto Saratoga, B.B. King, Afro-Cuban All Stars, Arturo Sandoval, Jari Sillanpää), and pianist David Alfaro (Afro-Cuban All Stars, La Banda JB de Joaquin Betancourt).
EuroCubans offer a wonderful intercultural experience and a unique insight into the history and present of Cuban music, while at the same time thrilling audiences with energetic performances and contagious dance rhythms that will leave no one sitting still.
