In the postwar years, jazz is considered an undesirable remnant of American imperialism—officially not banned, but certainly discouraged. Still, many young people follow their own path. Among them is a group of radio musicians sent by the broadcasting authorities on a propaganda tour to labor brigades, agricultural cooperatives, and construction sites as part of a major socialist five-year plan. While the official goal is to boost morale and contribute to the national effort through cultural performances, the tour is also meant to “re-educate” the musicians—especially their leader, Maks, a womanizing jazz enthusiast whose political future hinges on the tour’s success. Traveling in a dilapidated bus, the group is accompanied by Jan, a stern political commissar assigned to ensure ideological purity. As tensions mount between Jan and the free-spirited musicians, their performances become increasingly fraught. The situation spirals when Peter, one of the band members, uses the proximity to the border as a chance to defect to Italy. With ideological conflicts clashing with youthful passion and artistic freedom, the success of the entire tour—and Maks’s future—hangs in the balance.
