The free-spirited “grandma” Sara B. escapes from a retirement home at night, placed there by her daughter. While hitchhiking, she meets David, a saxophonist driving an old Mercedes, who has just had a falling out with his landlord. The two head toward the coast. While Sara is asleep, David steals her jewelry and heads to a seaside jazz club, where he meets the singer Laura. Meanwhile, Sara, now traveling by bus, manages to find him—only for David and Laura to flee again. Laura charms David and convinces him to return the stolen jewelry. They head to a casino, where Sara wins a large sum of money. The next morning, a frightened David finds her unconscious on the floor of their hotel room—she’s suffering from a diabetic episode. Sara recovers in the hospital, much to her daughter’s displeasure, and the trio continues their joyful adventures.
