Zhao Jiping: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No.1 in E-flat major

***

Nikolaj Rimski-Korsakov: Scheherazade, op. 35

At the 73rd Ljubljana Festival, the Chengdu Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Chen Lin, regarded as one of the most promising Chinese conductors of her generation. She serves as a professor of conducting at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and regularly collaborates with opera and symphony orchestras around the world. The violin soloist will be Ning Feng, who began his musical journey in his hometown of Chengdu before continuing his violin studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. He is the recipient of numerous music awards, including the first prize at the Paganini Competition.

Zhao Jiping, the current honorary president of the Chinese Musicians’ Association, is best known for his film scores, though his compositional output spans a wide range of musical genres and forms. As he himself states, with his Violin Concerto No. 1, he sought to express the spirit of friendship and love. The work took over a decade to complete and was premiered by none other than Ning Feng, who also encouraged the composer to finish the piece.

The inspiration for Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade came from the collection of folk tales One Thousand and One Nights. In this work, he combined colorful orchestration with oriental musical elements and lively rhythms, creating one of the most beloved symphonic compositions of the 19th century.
